The New York Times has described Collette Stewart as an “acute, subtle mover and an expressive performer.” Her professional career as a dancer and choreographer has spanned the last 25 years, during which time she has danced with Jin-Wen Yu Dance and Li Chiao-Ping Dance in Madison, Wisconsin, wild goose chase in Maine, 1*4*8 the collective and Dixiefun Dancetheater in New York, and Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth in Fort Worth, Texas. Her choreography has been presented at Dance Theater Workshop, Joyce Soho, Gelsey Kirkland Performing Arts Center and Peridance in New York as well as at Festivals around the country in San Francisco, Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina and New Mexico. She presented work internationally at the World Dance Alliance Global Summit in France in 2014. Collette completed her MFA in Dance at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee where she received the Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship Award.
As a performer and movement educator, Collette incorporates imagery and anatomy as a means to heighten people’s internal understanding of the body in motion and kinesthetic awareness of experience. In addition to her dance degrees, Collette earned Pilates certification through The Pilates Center in Boulder and Yoga Certification through Kripalu Yoga. In 2004, Collette started Movement Insights, LLC. Through Movement Insights, she offered Pilates classes and private sessions and began a teacher training program that ran 2007-2019. From 2008-2015, Collette owned and taught at the Blue Mounds Pilates Center in Blue Mounds. In 2015, she opened Pilates on Harrison in Madison, WI and continues to teach there today. As a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, Collette teaches Contemporary Dance, Somatics and Repertory classes and directs the Pilates Certificate, a 20-credit Pilates teacher training curriculum she designed in 2012.
