Liz Sexe is a dance educator, performer and director of Liz Sexe Dance. Currently, Sexe is a lecturer in UW-Madison’s Dance Department where she teaches Ballet, Pilates and Contemporary. Sexe is a passionate and collaborative educator who encourages students to take risks, assess their successes and failures, and learn from all experiences.
Her choreographic and collaborative work’s mission is to provide opportunities that support the local dance community by utilizing local dancers and collaborate with local choreographers. Projects include a collaboration with Dane Arts (Dane Arts Dance Arts) where Sexe Dance curated an evening of dance with local artists. She also has shared shows with Scratch Dance and Collette Stewart. In 2019 she received the University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of the Arts Edna Wiechers Arts in Wisconsin Award where she produced Untitled: for the sake of progress “Liberty” was explored in an evening length production by both Madison and Tomah Dancers. Her choreographic work has also been featured at the World Dance Alliance Festival in Hawaii, UW-Madison, Danceworks in Milwaukee, WI, and UW-Eau Claire.
Sexe’s work as a performing artist is grounded in the belief that performance is a mode of sharing perspective through embodied experience. In 2016 Sexe self produced and performed in TWO: exploring duos where seven choreographers created works exploring the idea of duo. “Self-producing such an ambitious show might be a risky proposition, but the community-building spirit propelling this project means that Madison gets an excellent glimpse into the modern dance scene.” (Isthmus[1] ) Over the years, she has performed both regionally and nationally with Marlene Skog and Dancers and Li Chiao-Ping Dance Company. Sexe is described in Madison’s Isthmus as a “clean and efficient mover,” and having “toughness under her grace.”
