Guest Artists

The department regularly schedules guest artist residencies with active professional dance artists to complement the class training given by our excellent faculty. These residencies give students prolific performance opportunities to interact with nationally renowned artists and master class instructors including the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Pilobolus, Meredith Monk, Elizabeth Streb, David Parsons, and Tim Miller.  Madison attracts well-known dance companies such as Eiko & Koma, Joe Goode Performance Group, Kibbutz Dance Company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Nikolais/Louis Dance Company, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Feld Ballet/NY, Martha Graham Dance Company, Dance Brigade, and Les Ballets Africains.  Whenever possible, the department presents or co-sponsors artists from these companies while they are performing locally in Madison.

Merce Cunningham MinEvent with
Carol Teitelbaum & Documentary Filmmaker
Lise Friedman

January 23-February 9, 2018

The Dance Department will host former Merce Cunningham Dance Company member Carol Teitelbaum January 23-February 9, 2018 for a Merce Cunningham MinEvent residency. The residency will also include documentary filmmaker, and UW-Madison alumna, Lise Friedman who will present about her film "If the Dancer Dances," a film about Merce Cunningham's work in the 21st century.

Teitelbaum will restage Cunnigham's MinEvent, a selection of choreographic material from several Merce Cunningham dances, for performance in the Faculty Concert in February 2018. MinEvent is an uninterrupted sequence of excerpts drawn from Cunningham’s work, which refers to the Event format Cunningham developed in the early years of his company to accommodate non-traditional performing spaces. Teitelbaum will also teach a series of master classes.
