Hooked on comics: How Jeff Butler turned a childhood obsession into a career

May 28, 2018

On Wisconsin magazine, a publication for UW-Madison alumni, recently put the spotlight on Jeff Butler, a current student with the School of Education’s Art Department.

Butler first arrived at UW-Madison in 1976, but left in the 1980s without his diploma to pursue a successful career as an artist.

“Before college, drawing was just an intuitive thing that I did,” Butler tells On Wisconsin. “College was the first time I started paying attention to the formal and academic aspects of creating art.”

Over the years he has worked on Dungeons & Dragons illustrations for the Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, gaming company TSR, Inc., and worked on comics such as “The Green Hornet,” The Lost World: Jurassic Park” and “Hercules.” After returning to Madison in 1997, he created video game characters for Raven Software for more than a decade, and he began teaching comic book art and cartooning at Madison College in 2012.

Earlier this year he returned to school full-time and he plans to graduate from UW-Madison in the fall.
