Siegel to speak about 'Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Art of Improvisation'

March 09, 2018
Multifaceted media practitioner Fleeta Chew Siegel is visiting UW-Madison to present "Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Art of Improvisation: From Planned Opportunities to Continual Uncertainty."

Siegel will present twice; once at the Art Department Visiting Artist Colloquium on Wednesday, March 14 at 5 p.m. in L160 Elvehjem, and again at the Dance Department Friday Forum on Friday, March 16 at 3:30 p.m. in the Margaret H'Doubler Performance Space, Lathrop Hall.

Siegel has directed and co-produced a wide range of projects over the past 15 years. He specializes in digital media and film/video production, and has extensive experience teaching and working with a multitude of digital technologies in performance and design.

Since 2004, he has been collaborating with the dancer and associate professor of dance, UC Irvine, Sheron Wray, on the innovative "Texterritory," which uses mobile phones and SMS technology to allow interactions between the audience and performer. Wray is the UW-Madison Arts Institute's Spring 2018 Interdisciplinary Artist in Residence.

In 2006, Siegel produced a feature-length documentary "In Search of the Valley" that epitomizes the philosophy of innovation, entrepreneurship and cultural capital.
