UW-Madison, UW System launching Title and Total Compensation Study

August 17, 2017

UW-Madison, in collaboration with the UW System, is conducting a comprehensive two-year review of current job titles (excluding tenure-track faculty titles) and total compensation.

This is a unique opportunity as campus has not completed a review like this in 30 years.

Like HR Design, thorough and extensive campus engagement is a part of the project plan as we move through the two-year review (see below).  The Title and Total Compensation Study (TTC) will result in relevant and market-informed titles, pay scales, and benefits/work-life, and leave structures.

The School of Education’s Assistant Dean for Human Resources Teri Engelke is serving on the UW-Madison Collaboration and Outreach team for the TTC Project.  (Please feel free to provide any and all feedback about the process, or direct any questions, to Teri at: teri.engelke@education.wisc.edu.)

Following is information about the TTC project to date, composed by the Office of Human Resources. It includes a link to the TTC project website and the schedule for upcoming informational forums. All are encouraged to attend one of the forums.

Additional details are also available at the Study Website.

About the Study

The results of the Study will provide you with clear guidance to make informed decisions about advancing in your career and provide tools to managers when making decisions about pay or promotional opportunities for their employees. No employee will lose their job as a result of the study.

The Study will result in relevant and market-informed titles and pay ranges. Your base pay will not change because of the Study. The results will provide guidance on how to address market issues over time.

The results will help us sustain and grow our outstanding workforce.

Study Phases
In Phase One, we established a project team structure that will eventually include over 250 employees. We also finalized a two-year project plan.

In Phase Two, we will develop a job framework which will align titles and provide clear and transparent career progression. This fall we will hold forums to inform you about the Study and gather your input on the draft job framework. Employees and managers will update job descriptions early in 2018.
