Six straight years: 100 percent of UW athletic training students pass certification exam

May 01, 2017

For the sixth consecutive year, students from UW-Madison’s Athletic Training Program achieved a 100 percent pass rate on the Board of Certification (BOC) examination for the 2016-17 reporting period.

Since initial accreditation in 2000, UW-Madison’s AT program -- which is housed in the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology -– has always achieved a program passing rate on the BOC exam that is at least 20 percent above the national average.

Athletic Training Program logoThe BOC exam is a national board exam that tests students in the areas of prevention and wellness, clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, treatment and rehabilitation, and organization and professional health and well being.

The BOC credential is required to practice as an athletic trainer. Athletic trainers are health care professionals who work in collaboration with physicians in a variety of settings.

“I'm very proud of our athletic training students,” says Andrew Winterstein, a clinical professor with the Department of Kinesiology and director of  UW-Madison's Athletic Training Program. “They have worked hard to embrace the tradition of excellence at UW-Madison. Even more rewarding than the streak of BOC exam success is what our students go on to do and how they impact their communities after they leave Wisconsin.”
